VP of Technical Services

As the VP of Technical Services at Timescale, you’ll take the helm of a critical function that spans Implementation Engineering and Technical Support. Reporting directly to our CTO and Co-founder, this is a rare opportunity to architect and scale the customer-facing technical experience.

We’re targeting a VP-level hire but are also open to exceptional Senior Director candidates with the right experience and leadership vision, especially those with experience scaling technical services organizations.

We’re looking for a company builder: someone who has taken Technical Services from 0 to 1, and knows how to evolve it from 1 to scale. That means we’re looking for a leader with deep roots in Professional Services or Implementation Engineering, someone who can drive delivery engagements today while designing a scalable, cross-functional org for tomorrow. You’ve seen what “great” looks like, but you don’t copy and paste, you reimagine what’s possible.

You’ll be responsible for designing and operationalizing how we serve our customers technically: ensuring customer engagements are scoped and executed effectively, technical teams are aligned, escalations are minimized, and customer outcomes are owned end-to-end. In addition to an emerging PS/IE team, Timescale runs a follow-the-sun global support staffed 24x7.

📍 This role is remote. We are open to candidates in North American or European time zones. Fluency in English is required.

What you will be responsible for in this role:

  • Defining and operationalizing the end-to-end customer journey across Technical Support, Solutions Architecture, and Implementation Engineering.
  • Breaking down silos between SA, IE, CS, and Support, building a unified team and shared sense of ownership.
  • Enhancing technical deal qualification, delivering opinionated and impactful demos, and ensuring we set customers up for success before the sale closes.
  • Partnering closely with Engineering and Product to reduce escalations, improve issue triage, and empower frontline technical teams to resolve issues independently.
  • Developing knowledge sharing systems, training programs, and tooling that elevate team capabilities and drive self-sufficiency. Identifying points of friction and customer drop-off throughout the journey and systematically removing them.
  • Building repeatable playbooks, scalable service delivery models, and high-performing teams with a bias for speed, clarity, and quality.
  • Acting as a strategic leader and tactical executor: from setting vision to jumping into a Slack thread to help solve a live customer issue, you’re all in.

You could be a great fit if you:

  • Have 7+ years of experience leading or building Professional Services, Technical Services, or similar functions at a technical B2B company.
  • Have successfully taken a technical post-sales function from 0 to 1, and know what it takes to evolve from 1 to scale.
  • Bring deep expertise in the database space. You understand how developers buy, build, and run database systems, and how to guide them to success.
  • Have strong opinions about what great SA/IE/Support looks like—but you’re also a listener, ready to learn from the team on the ground.
  • Thrive in high-growth environments where ambiguity is the norm, and “figure it out” is a daily mantra.
  • Are obsessed with the customer journey and constantly ask, “How can we make this better?”
  • Are a strong systems thinker who builds with scale and sustainability in mind, but are also not afraid to iterate quickly to meet today’s needs.
  • Believe that organizations are strongest when they reflect the diversity of the world around them, and you actively work to make that a reality.
  • Come from a Professional Services or Implementation Engineering background, and bring hands-on experience delivering technical services to demanding customers in complex environments.

You might not be a great fit if:

  • You haven’t built a technical services or post-sales team before, or you’re only comfortable optimizing existing structures.
  • You prefer rigid org charts and don’t enjoy rolling up your sleeves across functions.
  • You prefer to work in well-established companies where a process already exists.
  • You’re more comfortable in strategy meetings than helping triage urgent customer issues or leading technical enablement.
  • You shy away from cross-functional collaboration, especially with Sales, Engineering, or Product.
  • You prefer to work behind the scenes and aren’t energized by leading change.
